Moving to Rwanda & culture shock |
Justin's cultural awareness training and language sessions have provided me with invaluable insight into Rwanda, its people and its culture. His sensitive approach to the debrief following our visit to the Genocide Memorial site was much appreciated. Justin is an excellent language teacher, he devises lessons that are relevant, engaging and fun! I now feel confident to greet people appropriately and start a basic conversation, all of which is helping me to settle into my life here in Rwanda. Murakoze cyane Justin!

Justin's session on cultural awareness in Rwanda was extremely helpful! After meeting with him, our group felt much better equipped to live in Rwanda for the upcoming year. The session was wide-reaching in topics and ranged from proper greetings to the intricacies of respect in the Rwandan workplace. We wish we had met with him on our first day in Rwanda!

I highly recommend Justin for any newcomer to Rwanda. Justin organised a 1,5 hour one-on-one session about Rwandan culture for me. The session was well structured and focused on the issues relevant for expats. Justin is very good at explaining Rwanda and understands what is relevant for a newcomer.

I’m glad to find out Justin’s session at the last minute. I made a decision to participate right away, because gaining more understanding of Rwandan culture would help me better facilitate my work with Rwandan people and living in Rwanda. During his session, I had many discoveries on Rwandan culture that I wouldn’t have known if I didn’t participate.
Living in a different culture can be challenging and often frustrate expats. Justin is very insightful and experienced at helping foreign folks understand of his culture to ease the challenge. I enjoyed his session very much. Thank you, Justin!

Thanks for the training. It was such a great event and was really practical. It’s a heavy topic and you did a really nice job of keeping things light and keeping us all engaged. The frameworks helped me think about how my culture relates to the other people I work with and, when combined with real-life examples that came out of the group discussion, lead to some really great insights. I plan to implement a lot of these ideas to become a better manager and colleague.

"Justin's Cultural Awareness Training was so much more than I expected. It's an excellent introduction to Rwandan people's values, beliefs, perceptions, and mannerisms. Justin's insight, critical thinking, and good quality humour shed light upon the social and professional relationships in the context of Rwanda and gave me a clear understanding of the differences between my culture and the culture of Rwanda. I stepped out of the training feeling more appreciative of Rwandan people's behaviours, and empowered to build strong and long-lasting friendships with the people who so wholeheartedly have welcomed me in their country."

Many thanks, Justin, for offering such an engaging and insightful workshop on what to do and what not to do here in Rwanda. Culture is such a minefield but you did such a great job of picking out the essential points for newly arrived foreigners to know and more importantly, you told us why Rwandans think and behave the way they do, And without stereotyping either. I look forward to future learning with you.
--- Jeremy Solomons, JSA Consulting (Rwanda)
I truly enjoyed Justin training both from content and performance. I found Justin both clear, listening and also relevant on questions. The 1hour format is perfect for consistent and efficient training, and content is both useful on professional and personal experiences, and even quickly verified when living in Rwanda.
I therefore strongly recommend the Rwanda cultural awareness training for anyone who wants to dive into main Rwandan culture aspects.

In a very short time Justin helped me advance my journey of a deeper understanding Rwandan people & culture

I took Beginners Kinyarwanda online with Justin over a two-week period via Teams and Google Meeting in January 2022. I was provided with lots of learning resources, including the beautifully produced publications Moving to Rwanda and Rwanda Cultural Awareness as well as an excellent guide to conversational Kinyarwanda. Justin accompanied me on my visit to the genocide memorial in Kigali and was a sensitive and intuitive educator knowing when the right time was to provide input and when it was appropriate to allow space for quiet contemplation. I highly recommend Justin as both a language tutor and an intercultural educator for new arrivals to Rwanda.
